A Google Business Profile checklist for service businesses
Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a customer sees, before your website.
Work through this list once, then keep it current.
4 minute read. Updated 15 October 2026.
Get the basics exactly right
- Your business name as it appears on your signs and paperwork, with no extra keywords added. Google treats keyword stuffing as a guideline violation.
- The most specific primary category that fits, then secondary categories for the other work you do.
- A phone number that gets answered, or texts back when it does not.
- Your website, and a booking link if customers can book online.
- Accurate hours, including holiday hours.
If you go to your customers
Set a service area that covers the places you actually work.
If customers do not visit your address, you can hide it and show only the service area.
Services and description
List each service you offer in plain words.
Keep the description short: what you do, where and for whom.
Photos
Add real photos of your work, your team and your vehicles.
Add new ones as you finish jobs, so the profile looks active.
Reviews
- Ask every happy customer, right after the job, with a direct link.
- Reply to every review, including the bad ones, calmly and briefly.
- Do not offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews. It is against Google policy and can get reviews removed.
Keep it current
Anyone can suggest edits to your profile, and Google can apply them.
Check the profile every month or so and correct anything that changed.
The Performance view shows calls, website clicks and direction requests, so you can see whether the profile is bringing in work.
How KBX helps
We set up or clean up the profile, keep it current, and ask for reviews automatically after each job, as part of the Business Suite.
